"Adobe Photoshop Express is an online version of the popular digital image-editing software. If you use Ubuntu, Go to your software centre and search "GIMP" I will say the interface is a bit in the way at times, but, you get used to it It's great if you are starting out, or if you are on a budget. psd (photoshop) files AND Photoshop Brushes (.abr) work as well. Some photoshop (.8bi) Plugins work on GIMP, you can open. ![]() Overall, it is a decent program! I still use it today if I just need to edit something REALLY quick, as photoshop takes some time to load up especially compared to this. I was told by Mum to start off with GIMP to be sure that I wanted to keep at the endeavours before she made a move to get photoshop for me to use. Personal Experience: When I started to do graphic design as a true Hobby/Commitment. "One of the most powerful general-purpose image editors around.Extremely powerful and easy to work with, GIMP is ideal for both amateur and pro photographers, Web designers, or anyone who wants to create and edit professional-quality digital images on a budget."Ĭompatibility: Windows 7/Vista/XP, MacOSX, Linux. Here are some free and cheap alternatives to the full Photoshop Package: If there's anything I can do to assist, post a note in the forums or drop me an email. To help those who cannot afford the £500+ ($800) for Photoshop or just want something lighter in size, but would like to enjoy the freedom of Graphic design I've concocted a list of free and cheaper alternatives to Photoshop that work pretty much the same If it's stable enough, I'll do a general release of it (be forwarned, though, that this may increase support requests as it'll find its way into more users hands). If you're able to update to 2.2.13, I'll package up a version with a new-style launcher and a custom splash (for GIMPShop) and drop it in the forums as a test release. I'm updating the plugins cache before starting GIMP so that it won't have to re-find all it's plugins. I'm in the process of updating GIMP Portable to 2.2.13 and introducing an updated launcher that should greatly speed startup times. The instructions online were outdated and failed about 1/2 way through. I even tried to learn how to compile GIMP so I could take a stab at updating GIMPShop, but no dice. I actually thought GIMPShop on Windows had been abandoned, since nothing had been done on it in quite a while. Perhaps it is the MDI addon that's doing it, as GIMP itself is quite stable and works with no issues on these same boxes. ![]() I'm not sure why it's so unstable, but the Windows releases crash as soon as I try to draw on both my XP systems and on my Win2K test box. GIMPShop works portably using the standard GIMP Portable launcher bits, so there's not much work to be done other than packaging it up. I'll also take a stab at a Windows Installer and a portable version. I'm going to update Gimpshop source to 2.2.13 within the next few days and will give you guys a heads-up when it's ready. Basically, I replaced Gimp's hard-coded English language menus with Photoshop-style alternatives. Gimpshop's menus are currently in American English no matter what language environment your computer uses. That said, Gimpshop is unfortunately not language-friendly. Gimpshop's ONLY changes to the GIMP source are changes to text strings (that and a different splash screen). The differences are solely cosmetic with regards to menu layout, window names and tool names. Otherwise, Gimpshop source is nearly identical to Gimp source in every way. I think this is the result of the way it was compiled and the MDI that was added by the guys that ported the source code. The Gimpshop packages that are out there for Windows are admittedly unstable. I created the Gimp fork known as Gimpshop. Hi guys, I just wanted to weigh in so that you have all the info you need about Gimpshop source and hopefully making it a portable app. ![]()
